The Saint Malo region is one of amazing travellers from Duguay Trouin to Jacques Cartier, Mahée de la Bourdonnais, Surcouf, Charcot and Chateaubriand. Their eyes riveted on the opened seas, men from here have always sailed to new shores and different suns.
At the end of Louis XIV’s reign, Saint Malo was the richest port in the French kingdom.
Native of Saint Malo first created the « Compagnie des Mers du Sud » which engaged in trade with South America and then, some of them created the «Compagnie des Indes Orientales de Saint Malo».. The most sought-after riches were spices and men of this country became real hunters of nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, pepper. This remains the most intoxicating and sumptuous period of the “City of the sea”.
